THANK YOU!

Thank you to all who attended the affordable housing meeting at Village Hall, Monday, September 25!

The room was packed with Oak Park people committed to providing affordable housing for more people in our community. The Coalition was very well represented.

Lynda Schueler and Rob Breymaier presented on behalf of the Oak Park Homelessness Coalition and David Pope also presented. Lynda and Rob presented the recommendations from the Housing work group:

  1. The establishment of a rental assistance fund for those who are "at-risk" of homelessness, but don't qualify for assistance under existing public resources.
  2. Investing in an affordable development that would leverage other public funds.

Ultimately, the Village board decided and directed the Village staff to prepare an RFP to developers with the potential to put $500,000 or $1 million (the funds collected from recent development projects) toward an affordable housing project.

We will discuss this topic at our next Coalition meeting on Thursday, October 19 at 10 AM.

Thank you all for working to make homelessness rare, brief and one time in Oak Park!

The Oak Park Homelessness Coalition (OPHC) is a multi-stakeholder group working to end homelessness in Oak Park.

Comprised of representatives from local governments, school districts, social service agencies, non-profits, the Community of Congregations, and businesses, the OPHC meets quarterly, working together to develop a baseline understanding of the homelessness issue in Oak Park, goals and strategies to combat homelessness, tactics to create a public-facing campaign that educates people about the issue and how people can help, and a broad coalition to help those who are homeless or in danger of being homeless.
